Download Source and Tests for Silverlight 2 Controls
posted by: Bruce Kyle

The source for Silverlight 2 controls has been released with thousands of unit tests along with the test framework. That said, to develop Silverlight-based applications that use the Silverlight 2 Beta 1 controls, you do not need this source code. Instead, you must install the Silverlight 2 Software Development Kit (SDK) Beta 1. The source code for the Silverlight 2 Beta 1 controls enables you to learn the inner workings of the controls. To get the source code and tests, see Source Code and Unit Tests for Silverlight 2 Beta 1 Controls on Microsoft download site.

The download is useful if you want to extend the controls or use them as a reference implementation when you implement your own controls. Complete unit tests provide additional guidance in developing polished, professional controls.

This download contains the complete source code and unit tests for the Silverlight 2 Beta 1 controls included in System.Windows.Controls.dll, System.Windows.Controls.Extended.dll, and System.Windows.Controls.Data.dll.

The source code for the Silverlight 2 Beta 1 controls includes implementations for the following controls:

  • Button
  • ButtonBase
  • Calendar
  • CheckBox
  • ContentControl
  • DataGrid
  • DatePicker
  • GridSplitter
  • HyperlinkButton
  • ListBox
  • RadioButton
  • RangeBase
  • RepeatButton
  • ScrollViewer
  • Slider
  • ToogleButton
  • ToolTip
  • WatermarkedTextBox

SharePoint Administration Toolkit Released
posted by: Public Sector DPE Team

[Cross-Posted from Lamont's Blog]

Zach Rosenfield (a Program Manager on the SharePoint Team) posted an announcment introducing the SharePoint Administration Toolkit. This promises to be a great resource for administering your MOSS and WSS v3.0 deployments. The initial version of the toolkit contains a couple of useful administrative tools, including the Batch Manager, which allows you to schedule bulk operations against site collections in a SharePoint farm, and a new command to the STSADM command-line utility called "updatealert" which will refresh all alert URLs in a specific site collection, which is important if you change the URL of a web application or after an upgrade. A full whitepaper describing the toolkit can be found here.

Check out Zach's post of you want to have a good understanding of what the toolkit addresses and the features it contains. The toolkit is available for download for both x86 and x64 SharePoint deployment configurations.

Enjoy! I know I will! :-)

MSDN TV Live: WCF i olika applikationer - demokoden
posted by: JohanLindfors

Should an architect code?
posted by: marcod

For those interested, the role of an architect is –also- being discussed in MSDN, here. My first reply next:

The answer depends on what do you mean by “architect” (noun) and also by “code” (verb).

What seasoned designers talk about when discussing architecture is so all-encompassing and important for the final outcome that makes me wonder why a project team member wouldn’t need to fully master the actual concretization of such concepts at all levels? I suspect the answer is related to the sad state of practice in many organizations due to the faulty belief that the main task in writing software is a mechanical and repetitive task that can be industrialized with expendable and interchangeable human ‘resources’.

See: Discussing uncomfortable questions

Pursuing a clear definition of a concept like architecture is good because the related thinking-researching cycles give opportunity to reach sound conclusions (by ‘sound’ I mean -inferences with scientific properties like provisional and falsifiable). I have not yet found a satisfactory definition for what architecture in computing really means, far less a definition of what the role of an architect could possibly be. By now, the proposal by Frederick Brooks, Jr. for the concept of architecture is arguably the most sensible definition I have found:

“Computer architecture, like other architecture, is the art of determining the needs of the user and then designing to meet those needs as effectively as possible” –Oxford English Dictionary

Why? Because it explicitly includes three key concepts: art, user needs, and design.

A discussion about the design concept would be in order to answer the question: “Should an architect code?”

So, if by code, do you mean executing a mechanical and repetitive task that can be industrialized? Then the answer is ‘no’ (and also ‘no’ for any self-respecting software professional by the way).

On the other hand, if by code, do you mean the act of expressing design intentions and the execution of models to corroborate hypothesized ideas with contextual data? Then the answer is ‘yes’ (and also ‘yes’ for any self-respecting software professional by the way).

Next, I quote a thinker whose name I don’t know (if the author is listening, see: What type of person should design software? ).

"There are certainly people who think more about high level structure than they do about low level details. This is a valuable talent, and not one that should be scoffed at or discounted. Unfortunately, in some circles, it has become popular for people with these talents to divorce themselves from code. The term "architect" takes on an aura of authority and power, whereas a coder is deemed a lowly laborer, a dime-a-dozen worker bee.

In reality, while the difference in talent is real, the polarization into different roles with different authorities is harmful. Those folks who are good at modeling and architecture must still remain grounded in code. For their skills to remain relevant and useful, they have to keep in touch with the medium they are trying to create structures for. Likewise, the programmer who divorces himself from concerns of architecture harms himself and his team by abdicating responsibility for something he is in an intimate position to control. There is a way for these two talents to work well and closely together, but they have to put forth the effort to understand each other."

More notes about the practice of architecture:

Software architecture is much more than structure

Architecture is not about scalability, not even about user, it is all about usage

What changed in Windows Installer 4.5?
posted by: Windows Installer Team

Apart from the feature work that we did in Windows Installer 4.5, we made a few changes to Windows Installer to address some user feedback or pain points. Here's some of the important issues that were addressed:

  1. Added SeBackupPrivilige back to the Windows Installer service. This sould help any custom actions that needed this privilige like the ones that were reported on the Vista Compatability Team blog.
  2. Some case sensitive service name comparisions in InstallValidate used to result in an unnecessary files-in-use message on Vista. This is now fixed in Windows Installer 4.5.
  3. When a patch added new content in the form of a new component and that patch was being uninstalled, we used to remove that content, even if that content is shared by other products. This is now fixed in Windows Installer 4.5.

In addition to this, since Windows Installer 4.5 is the latest release of Windows Installer, it will have all the fixes and feature work that we did till Vista SP1.

posted by: Mark.Carroll

These were opened up last night - see http://www.microsoft.com/nz/teched08/index.aspx

A bit of insider info - being directly involved with both expect to see some really good stuff in both Architecture and Voice of Customer tracks. I'm impressed with the quality of potential speakers and topics this year.
